Artwork Story: When visiting Kangaroo Island in 2025, I hoped to experience the endangered KI subspecies of Glossy Black Cockatoos, I’d spent almost 10 days searching, hearing their calls overhead but missing where they’d landed. One of my last evenings there, I heard their calls close by and as I slowly crept towards the noise, finally in front of me, was a family of 3 perched on an old gum tree pruning their feathers, feeding their little one and getting ready to roost for the night.

I had goosebumps, not only because opposite them over American River was the most amazing sunset, but to see their fledgling, the only one they would have raised that year, and even though I was thinking about the challenges it may have to face in the future to keep their species alive, something about seeing them there in that moment, gave me hope.

When you look at this piece, I hope you see the beauty and magic of this moment but also hope you find inspiration in it, I want it to be a reminder that even when times are tough, there is still hope. .

Painting is 30x60cm, acrylic on canvas, stretched & ready to hang with Certificate of Authenticity.
